Pretreatment of Aluminium

Chromate conversion coating is called “chromate coating” or “chromating” shortly. The coating is deposited on aluminium by different methods such as dipping or spraying.

The main target of this type of conversion coating is to have high corrosion protection of the treated aluminium parts / pieces and prepere the surface by forming an ideal substrate and optimum adhesion for following paintings.

Chromate coatings are provided on the metal surface as a result of a chemical reaction which dissolves unwanted metals and forms a layer containing complex chromium compounds. Chromic oxide and aluminium oxide occur as the result of the reaction shown below ;

2Al + 2Na2CrO4 >>>>>> Al2O3 + 2Na2O + Cr2O3

Chromate conversion films vary in color depending on the chemical being used and the base metal being coated. Colors range from clear, to light iridescent, to gold.
